Summary

The aim of the article is to illustrate the process of becoming the Other, based on the examples of contemporary Polish literature, presenting people who, due to a change in lifestyle, associated with illness, and thus isolation from society, often caused by the inability to move under normal conditions, the lack of communication with the outside world, or the declining material status, begin to function as marked, different and excluded persons. Due to the lack of proper communication with the doctor and care staff, the patient’s condition deteriorates, his mental state is disturbed, and he cannot get out of the closed circle of ailments caused by the disease.
