Summary

Being a traveller, being on the go, completing a journey – all of them draw attention both to the inevitable confrontation with the Other and the book by Artur Grabowski “Am (a diary from the other side), published in 2018, which is the subject of the present article. From the point of view of genology, the book, even though closely related to the Author’s life, work and journey to America, can be classified as a personal diary, travel diary, autobiography or philosophical essay.
In this context, the article focuses on the category of Other realized in the personal “diary from the other side” – the other side of the world and, most importantly, of oneself. In Grabowski’s book, the Other in hidden in Everyone and reveals its internal conflict, differentiation and paradoxicality in every encounter.
The theoretical basis of the article consists of various philosophical, sociological and literary conceptions of the Other. There are also references to Ryszard Nycz’s notion of the category of experience and the philosophy of Merleau Ponty or geopoetical and autobiographical hints by Małgorzata Czermińska and Elżbieta Rybicka.
