The article presents the discussion on the usefulness of the Remote Associates Test (RAT) in foreign language didactics, namely the possibility of stimulating creativity, as well as the ability to process information in target languages without the intermediary of the first language or another stronger language.
The first part of the article deals with the characteristics of RAT, while the second part presents an empirical study conducted with two groups of students of French as a foreign language with different levels of linguistic competence. The results indicate that the ability to think creatively in terms of constructing a remote association in the sample of individuals studied is not necessarily correlated with the level of proficiency in the target language, just as the cognitive profile, determined by the test measuring cognitive preferences at the level of intuitive operations, is not correlated with high scores on the RAT. The participants in the study agreed that the test proved to be a new tool to support creative behavior, but also expressed the concern for its high level of difficulty.
