Comic book creators use texts belonging to the literary canon for two reasons. Firstly, to reveal their educational and cultural potential in an attractive form, and secondly, to seek intertextual references and propose a new path for their contemporary use. The Ballads and Romances of Adam Mickiewicz has proved to be an interesting material for both strategies. ‘Pani Twardowska’, in particular, has drawn significant interest from comic artists and writers, having been published as a graphic story five times in the last quarter-century. This phenomenon cannot be discussed without considering the foundation laid by book illustrators such as Jan Marcin Szancer, Janusz Stanny, or Tadeusz Biernot, and the attempts to adapt Mickiewicz’s ballads to the language of animated film. The article seeks to integrate these conditions into a single, coherent interpretive model.
