The crossword is one of the world's most popular forms of mental entertainment, combining an ancient riddle with logical wordplay, testing general knowledge with deductive reasoning. First published on 21 December 1913, it quickly became a socio-cultural phenomenon. Krzysztof Oleszczyk's book covers its Polish history, starting with a crossword puzzle published in the 'Kurier Warszawski' on 31 January 1925. The following pages of the book, the result of many years of research (library and museum collections, hundreds of periodicals, foreign language studies), present the place and role of the crossword in social life in a multidimensional descriptive approach.
