Summary

The purpose of this article is to show how an imbalance in the interethnic relations in the Vilnius Region in the interwar period was reflected in A Chronicle of Amorous Accidents (1974) by Tadeusz Konwicki. This issue is addressed neither in the narrative description nor in the utterances of the characters (in accordance with the fictional objectives pursued by the author). I argue, however, that said issue remains visible at the level of the structure – in the depiction of the characters, the direction of their aspirations and in the choices regarding friendship and relationships. In my analysis, I expose these aspects of the novel and prove my thesis by applying close reading. I wish my arguments to be closely based on the text, hence the extensive footnotes containing quotes.
