Summary

The author of the article reconsiders the oeuvre of Zygmunt Gloger (1845‒1910), the author of Illustrated Encyclopedia of Old Poland, River Valleys, and A Polish Year in Life and Tradition, focusing on the idea of the publishing series “Folk Library”, by means of which Gloger wanted to popularize oral folk art, or – as he used to call it – “literature in live word”. As it is argued, “Folk Library” was much more influential than it was commonly believed. First and foremost, it was a platform for “thought exchange”, enabling the meeting of people from all walks of life in 19th-century Poland. By means of “Folk Library” Gloger attempted to connect two cultures, the written and the oral, so as to create a new language and a new cultural code.
