Summary

Relations between sport and religion have been drawing attention of more and more researchers in recent years. The paper examines the life and influence of one of the greatest British athletes and missionaries – Eric Liddell. It is divided into several major sections. First, the author discusses the historical development and importance of Muscular Christianity. Next, the fascinating life and fruitful activity of Liddell are explored. The main focus of interest is, however, his legacy – the impact on broadly understood culture, for example cinema, religion, as well as sport. The paper has largely been based on historical sources.
