Summary

Death of a natural person has significant legal consequences. Property relations of a natural person after his or her death pass on to his or her legal successors by the institutions provided by the law of succession. Death can therefore not only be a human drama but also lead to changes in the property status of the survivors, including their enrichment by inheritance. It causes serious threat: Leaving this world by a reach relative or spouse can be in the interest of the survivors. The criminal novels by Agatha Christie provide a lot of examples of this phenomenon. As background for the analysis of the heritage as crime motive in Agatha Christie’s novels serve the reflections on axiology of inheritance and on how the contemporary succession law can provide protection against behaviours which are focused on getting benefits by inheritance in the way deserving of moral condemnation.
