Summary

The aim of this paper is to provide an appraising discussion of Piotr Owsiński’s book Geschichte des Deutschen für jedermann: wissenschaftliche Materialien und Lehrmittel zur Einführung in die Geschichte der deutschen Sprache. On the one hand, we deal with an academic coursebook, where the author presents language changes in an original way, on the background of social, cultural and political changes. On the other hand, the book is a valuable scientific study of the history of the German language, as evidenced by very precise description of linguistic phenomena and numerous references to specialist literature, together with the author’s comments.
