Summary

The article analyses the practice of describing exotic plants in 16th-century texts about great geographical discoveries. The material under analysis is taken from the tenth book of Chronicle of the Whole World by Marcin Bielski, narrating about discovery of America and explorations of new territories in Oceania and Africa. Observations show that both the eyewitnesses of overseas exoticism and the authors of stories about the adventures of brave sailors presented the world of flora quite laconically, listing only the most characteristic features of individual plants. They described in more detail plants that, processed in one way or another, were used as spices.
