The subject of the article are instructions for developing speech introductions, contained in Book III of Aristotle’s Rhetoric. In the introduction, the author interprets fragments of Book I of the work, concerning the theoretical foundations of rhetorical art, and emphasizes the awareness of the psychological role of the introduction among theoreticians of rhetoric. The relevant analysis is a detailed presentation of Aristotle’s concept of the introduction together with an interpretation of his method of releasing the content of that introduction. The analysis also shows Aristotle’s concept of matching the content and form of the beginning of the speech to the rhetorical type and purpose of the speech. In the conclusion, the author recognizes the nature of these recommendations, linked to the general tenets of the work, as well as the specificity of approach of the Rhetoric’s creator to compositional issues.
