Summary

The crime novel is increasingly perceived not only as a classic rhetorical structure, but also as an anthropological, philosophical or sociological construct. The motif of illness is often employed in such structures. Its functional presence will be explained at the textual level, using classic rhetorical, narratological and genological tools.
The problems are presented in two subsequent, separate articles developing closely related issues. The first part (published in 2023) discusses historical and genre issues. The second part (to be published in 2024), in turn, covers detailed analyses of composition (dispositio and elocutio), the case status, rhetorical definition and rhetorical issue (quaestio, controversia). This idea aims to express the complementarity and comprehensiveness of the approach to crime novel problems from a rhetorical perspective.
Examples will be drawn from two crime novels: a Spanish bestseller published in 1909 The Flanders Panel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte (detective story) and Sidetracked by Henning Mankell published in 1995 (social crime story).
