In this article, we focus on the linguistic structure of gossip and its impact on shaping public opinion. The studies of the language used by adults aged 19‒24 show that rumours, apart from negative effects, have a positive impact on the social group, as they form the basis for self-improvement and also have impact on behaviour within a group. The methodological basis of linguistic analysis used in our research is the theory of linguistic interaction.
