Summary

This paper focuses on the possible strategies a translator may choose to exploit when seeking to convey a feminist message which in the original text is implicit. Taking the example of the translation of Happiness, Like Water, a collection of short stories written by Chinelo Okparanta, the article explores means of transposing literary representations of the violence women endure through submission to husbands, superstition, religion and traditions. The notion of translation strategy is discussed at some length, focusing on its necessarily global and conscious nature. Feminist approaches to translating are also discussed.
