This article is an attempt to prove that the oppositions in Sienkiewicz’s depiction of the Trilogy are based on a pair of opposing yet complementary toposes: locus amoenus versus locus horridus. The exemplification of Sarmatian pleasant places and horrible places, based on a comparative perspective, concerns the author’s modified creation of the idyllic space of the moments of romance, associated with a particular type of female beauty, as well as the space-time of the steppe or forest. The analyses are set in the context of contemporary discussions of Sarmatism and the noble traditions of culture in the Republic of Poland.
