The text focuses on the linguistic and cultural imagery in translation as based on fragments of Wisława Szymborska’s poem „Niebo” [‘Sky’] from the volume “The End and the Beginning” and its two English translations. It has been noticed that these translations differ significantly from each other, and thus each of them has a different meaning. Therefore, the Author attempted to find the differences between the image of heaven/sky in Polish and English, in the original text and its translations, as well as identify differences between the translations of Wisława Szymborska’s poem. To achieve this aim, the Author has first reconstructed the images of sky/heaven in Polish and English, and then recreated the images in the original and translations. The article uses Agnieszka Gicala’s method, which shows the use of linguistic theory in translation activities. On the example of the metaphor of two icebergs, she presents the translation as a reconstruction of two images of the world – in the source and target language.
